The VBR Youth Forum was established in June 2019, following the launch of the UNESCO Youth Forum in Italy in September 2018 attended by a representative of the VBR. The VBR Youth Forum focuses mainly on capacity building initiatives.
After the first MAB Youth Forum in 2017 in Italy, the VBR board appointed a Youth Coordinator to help establish the VBR Youth Network and mobilise young people to actively participate in VBR activities. UNIVEN assisted with facilities for meetings on campus. With the help of the VBR Coordinator at the time, programs were formulated to reach out to young people.
In 2018, the Youth forum assisted with the Eco-school-programme at Mphaphuli Secondary School, where they helped to teach school children about renewable energy and other environmental related topics.
They have worked closely with an organisation called the Mathematic Solution Skills Development Centre which operates mainly in rural schools in the Collins Chabane Municipality. High-school leaners were taught about careers in science. The goal of the Youth Forum is to help young people design sustainable projects to reap benefits from utilizing their available resources.
Since 2015, Dzomo La Mupo, have been working closely with schools in the Vhembe District to develop inter-generational learning workshops with elders and youth in schools.
The aim is to create maps of their traditional territories, and rural landscapes to elicit indigenous knowledge of their land and natural resources, and to create collective visions for its protection.
Elders and youth also create seasonal calendars tracking the phenology and planting and harvesting cycles of indigenous plant crops and trees, to learn about the characteristics of different plant species.
These exchanges encourage dialogue and exchanges between elders and youth, to revive indigenous based knowledge, and encourage respect and strengthening of the role of elders in rural communities.
